Diogo Jota, surprise pick by Liverpool, became clutch king; bailed Jurgen Klopp on numerous occasions

Diogo Jota is no more. The 28-year-old Liverpool forward died shortly after midnight on Thursday, along with his brother Andre Silva, as their vehicle came off the motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla. According to the BBC, the incident happened in the province of Zamora in the northwest of Spain. It has now been confirmed that the Jota brothers were travelling in a Lamborghini. The car left the road, catching fire due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

Just days before, Diogo Jota was part of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning squad. This was the second time that the forward had won the top competition in the UK since joining the club in 2020. Not only this, but Jota had even gotten married two weeks earlier.

He married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025, and the couple had three children. Diogo Jota’s brother, aged 26, was also a professional footballer. He used to play for Portugal’s second division side Penafiel.

Jota started his professional career with Pacos de Ferreira. He also represented Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but it is safe to say that he truly found his calling after joining Liverpool in 2020. Jota made his name while playing for Wolves, helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League. Over his time with Wolves, he made 131 appearances, scoring 44 goals.

However, it was announced out of the blue that Jota would be joining Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool in 2020. At that time, the signing amount was 45 million pounds. There was scepticism when Jota was announced as the Reds’ player, but in no time, he managed to change public perception, making Anfield go crazy.

Over his stint with Liverpool, Jota started to be admired for his energy and work rate. However, it took him time to become a household name like some of the other Liverpool recruits, such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The biggest secret behind Jota’s signing going under the radar was the work ethic of the club’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Michael Edwards and manager Jurgen Klopp. The summer was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, Liverpool’s financial constraints led to their shrewdness in the transfer market.

Klopp’s desire for Jota was no surprise, as the forward had everything the Liverpool manager admired in his players—tactical versatility, relentless pressing, and technical gifts. Klopp himself later admitted that the club had been tracking Jota for some time.

The Portuguese sensation ticked all the right boxes – an intelligent mover, a natural finisher, and someone capable of playing across the front three. Most of the Reds supporters expected him to be a backup to the holy trinity of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino. However, Klopp, being Klopp, pulled a rabbit out of the hat as he saw Jota as someone who could possibly challenge them and eventually replace them.

Jota’s immediate impact

Jota made Liverpool fans aware of his talent almost instantly. During his Premier League debut for Liverpool, Jota scored within minutes of coming off the bench against Arsenal. This strike set the tone as he netted nine Premier League goals and four in the Champions League, including a memorable hat-trick against Atalanta in Bergamo.

Apart from his number of goals, Diogo Jota’s timing was always impeccable. He had an uncanny knack for scoring when Liverpool needed it most. He was the go-to man for most late winners, goals in tight matches, and finishes that turned draws into victories.

Jota then sustained an injury in Liverpool’s Champions League dead rubber against Midtjylland, which sidelined him for most of the 2020–21 season.

It was in 2021-2022 when Jota became a bona fide starter. He wrapped the season up with 21 goals in all competitions. His season was highlighted by a brace against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semifinal and his crucial strike against Manchester United at Anfield. Somehow or other, Jota always seemed to pop up when Liverpool needed a goal.

Jota’s movement, anticipation, and cold-blooded finishing made him a nightmare for defenders. One of his most memorable moments came on the final day of the 2021–22 Premier League season. With Liverpool still vying for the title, Jota’s attacking play kept the pressure on Wolves, his former club. Manchester City might have edged Liverpool out on the final day, but Jota’s performance showed his selfless and relentless commitment to the team’s cause.

Injury struck again in the 2022-23 season, and Jota missed most of the crucial games due to hamstring and calf issues. However, once again, he showed his clutch genes as he made a return in time to play the pivotal role in Liverpool’s late push for the Champions League qualification

Who can forget Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in April 2023? Liverpool had surrendered a 3–0 lead. After coming on level terms, Liverpool were in desperate need of a winner, and it was Jota who scored a stunning 94th-minute winner, showcasing tremendous composure. That goal not only rescued three points but reinforced his growing reputation as a player for the big moments.

In the 2023–24 season, Liverpool underwent a transitional phase as the midfield had to be reshaped after the departure of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. Jota found himself as one of the squad’s senior figures. He might not have been the face of the team like Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk, but no one could deny the impact of the forward.

Jota developed a reputation for doing the dirty work and being the true workhorse. Be it tracking back, pressing high, or winning aerial duels, Jota did everything that Klopp desired of him. He became a complete forward in Klopp’s system—less flashy than some, but arguably more efficient.

For Liverpool, Jota has consistently been the clutch player, who turned god mode when the club needed it the most. His goals have often come in the final 15 minutes of matches. Rescued draws, turning defeats into wins, and sealing trophies with decisive strikes, Jota has been the crucial member in making all of this possible.

Diogo Jota might never command the global superstardom of players such as Mohamed Salah and Steven Gerrard, but he has definitely cemented his legacy through grit and guts. He might not have been the blockbuster signing, but he became the heartbeat in crucial moments. Diogo Jota will forever be remembered not for what he did but for how and when he did it. If this is not clutch, then what is?
